I looked at my blog today and realized that I hadn't posted since last September. That, in the words of Josiah, is pretty lame. So, let's try this again and see if I can post more regularly.
I am currently in the midst of my last summer break, well, for the rest of my life. Next summer I will be studying for USMLE Step 1 (which is basically a huge test that I get to be all nervous about because I have to pass to keep going, etc, etc). We will also (hopefully) be moving back to Orlando to attend the FSU Med regional campus for my 3rd and 4th year clinical rotations. So this year I am just relaxing by the pool, traveling the world......oh wait, that's not me. I have children to feed and no student loan money with which to buy food. That left me with having to find something to do with myself this summer that actually brought in some semblance of an income. When all the dust settled, I decided to apply to be a teaching assistant for the new first years' doctoring class. Which I got.
What is a Doctoring TA? I am still trying to completely figure that out. The doctoring course is the introduction to patient care, teaching communication skills, history taking and physical exam skills. My TA partner and myself are working on sessions with the students that integrate the physical exams with the gross anatomy information they are learning. It is interesting. It is fun. It is not enough work to fill our days. So we spend some time researching health topics, attending conferences, and finding meaningful things to do (aka, surfing the internet, playing on Facebook and reading blogs). Now, don't get me wrong. We work hard when we have things on our to-do lists. But there just isn't enough to have a to-do list going ALL the time. So we have to piddle around in-between.
Anyway, enough school. There will be plenty of that to talk about come fall when I have 22 credit hours worth of classes (trying to hold in the screams of terror). Well, before I move on, let me show you my fall schedule. It is the ingredients for a good nightmare if you ask me.
Looks like fun, huh? I think it may be, if the stress of it doesn't kill me first.
I HAVE been able to do some fun things this summer with the kids. We took them to see Toy Story 3 this last week. We have visited my parents, are going to see my mother-in-law and sister-in-law for the 4th of July, and may go down to Orlando. Yesterday, I took the kids to an activity pool (the city pools here are great!) They played, got worn out and it was fun. Next time I will take my camera so I have better pictures than the little ones my iPhone takes. Don't get me wrong, my iPhone is awesome, but trying to make the little picture files viewable on anything other than a camera or Facebook is a challenge.
Well, look! A whole post! Maybe I will do this again before another 9 months goes by!

Hello! I stumbled upon your blog while doing a google search about FSU's College of Medicine. I am a current undergraduate student and a mother to a 3-year-old girl who is hoping to get in to FSU's Medical School in a few years. I really enjoyed reading your blog! I'm sure you are very busy these days, but I just wanted you to know there was someone out there who read your posts and truly enjoyed them. If you don't mind, I have a question for you. Does FSU allow you to have a say in where you go for clinical rotations? If I get in, my husband will also be going to FSU for his undergraduate degrees, and I will not be able to move to one of the regional campuses for the 3rd and 4th year; I would need to stay there with him in Tallahassee so that he can help me with our daughter. If you have a spare moment, drop me an email at amandapayne91@gmail.com. I would sincerely appreciate it!! Good luck in your future endeavors! :-)
